SIDEX acknowledges the importance of sustainable development
for the mining sector in Québec and contributes to
the development of various initiatives
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
ECOLOGO
Certification
Starting in 2013, SIDEX has contributed to the financing of phases 1 and 2 leading to the implementation in 2019 of the Ecologo certification for mineral exploration.
This is the first comprehensive certification that features third-party certification of environmental, social and economic practices for mineral exploration companies and providers. It was developed in Quebec and is now expanding across Canada and abroad.
Adoption of a sustainable development policy by companies
Since late 2011, SIDEX has requested that companies in which it invests provide a copy of their sustainable development policy or a commitment to adopt such a policy in the 6 months following an investment.
Junior companies are asked to include in their policy good governance practices and compliance with regulations in the performance of all activities regarding health, safety, the environment, economic benefits, and communications with local stakeholders and other land users.
Contribution to the “Fonds Restor-Action Cri”
SIDEX has contributed financially to the Fonds Restor-Action Cri, a fund composed of mining industry actors who work with the Government of Québec, the Eeyou Istchee James Bay Regional Government and the Cree Nation Government to restore abandoned mining sites in the Eeyou Istchee James Bay Territory.
The first step in 2018-2019 was used to establish an inventory of the sites. Their cleanup work started in 2020 and will continue until 2029. This initiative was inspired by the Fonds Restor-Action Nunavik that turned out to be a real success from the early 2000s.
Translation of PDAC’s e3 Plus norm
SIDEX has supported the translation in French of Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) e3 Plus norm in 2009.
The e3 Plus norm which is internationally recognized, provides a practical guide designed to help mineral exploration companies continuously improve their social, environmental, and health and safety performance.
